The Women’s Center of the Division of Student Affairs and many university partners brought the campuses together for their 7th annual Women Who Lead Conference on February 28th at MMC and March 6th at BBC. These events feature some of the most prominent women leaders of south Florida who share their many trials and triumphs as women leaders in their industry. One of the exciting highlights of this years’ conference was a student leader panel discussion moderated by Dr. Yolangel Hernadez-Suarez, Associate Professor and Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education for the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine, and Chief Medical Officer of the FIU HealthCare Network and Faculty Group Practice.
Panelists included a who’s who list of student leaders featuring:
- American Medical Women’s Association Co-Presidents, Elisabeth Bonilla and Allison Holder
- Student Government Association President and Board of Trustee Member, Laura Fariñas
- Omicron Delta Kappa Leadership Honor Society President, Julie Goncalves
- Society of Women Engineers President, Krystine Pimentel
- Black Student Union President, Lillie Wilson
Panelists shared their perspectives on: balancing student life, service, and leadership development; how to create and sustain important mentoring relationships; and, the current status of the glass ceiling as they see it play out on campus and beyond. Overall, panelists provided a fresh, inspiring perspective on gender equity and leadership.
2013 conference keynote speakers included alumnae, Casandra Roache and Lourdes “Luly” Balepogi, who continue to make FIU proud as successful entrepreneurs and leaders in our local community. Thank you to all of our campus and community partners who made the conferences an amazing success this year!
