Patricia Lopez-Guerrero, Associate Director in the Center for Leadership & Service has been named the Community Engagement Educator of the year by Florida Campus Compact.
Florida Campus Compact (FL|CC) is part of a national presidential membership organization. FL|CC works with university presidents and their campuses to integrate service with academic study and to provide a collegial experience for intercampus and community collaborations.
The Community Engagement Educator Award recognizes and honors outstanding individuals for significant contributions to the institutionalization of community engagement by inspiring a vision for service on the campus and supporting faculty, students, and campus-community partnerships.
During her tenure at FIU, Patty has made significant contributions to the present quality and quantity of service-learning activities at FIU and has become recognized as a campus expert in developing curricular and co-curricular learning opportunities. Patty serves on the University Engagement Taskforce, consults with faculty regarding service-learning course development, started the Civic Engagement Medallion of Distinction and most recently launched the Global Civic Engagement Student Advisory board which empowers student leaders to teach their peers about service project development, including proposal writing and presentation skills. The student board accepts and reviews the proposals and decides on grant awards to student groups requesting seed money for community-based projects.
Patty has created a legacy of service-learning at FIU through teaching, training, collaborating, advising, and promoting community engagement. She exemplifies the criteria for the Community Engagement Educator Award. Congratulations, Patty!
