Freshman Students

Welcome to the Panther Family! Once you have received your acceptance letter and have paid your $200 tuition deposit, you will need to attend Freshman Orientation.

Orientation is a program of fun and learning that is critical to your success as a new student. You can expect to:

  • Get familiar with campus buildings/landmarks
  • Meet an FIU peer advisor and your fellow new students
  • Hear about university resources and involvement opportunities
  • Meet with an academic advisor multiple times
  • Register for your first semester of classes

Please note: If you have chosen a fully-online degree program, your orientation process is different.

2017-2018 Orientation Dates by Admission Term

  • Early Fall 2017 (Classes Start June 19th)

We offer Freshman Orientation at both the Modesto A. Maidique Campus (MMC) and Biscayne Bay Campus (BBC). You should attend orientation at the campus where you plan to take most of your classes during your first semester.

There is no overnight option for students attending orientation at BBC or the last MMC session, so the program is from 8 am - 6 pm on day one and 8 am - 4 pm on day two. Only schedule for sessions that you can attend in full. Should you miss any portion of your orientation, you will need to reschedule for and attend another session in its entirety.

The Freshman Orientation Fee is $100 ($35 Student Orientation Fee/$65 Resource Fee) for the sessions at MMC and $70 ($35 Student Orientation Fee/$35 Resource Fee) for the sessions at BBC and the last MMC session. There is no waiver available for orientation fees. Your orientation fee covers:

Make sure you take care of these important items ASAP so you can register for your classes at Orientation.

  1. If you haven't paid your Orientation Fee, please do so ASAP. The university payment system (via My.FIU) works best with Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox.
  2. All incoming freshmen students are required to take the ALEKS Math Placement Assessment no later than 72 hours prior to orientation, even if you've taken AP or other credit-worthy exams. The test is free of charge for the first attempt and you can find more details on the Math Department website. College of Business majors are required to take the ALEKS in a proctored environment.
  3. Check the upper right-hand corner of your Student Center in My.FIU for any Holds and resolve them before attending orientation or you will not be able to register for your classes.
    • The First-Time Student hold will be removed once you complete your Freshman Orientation.
    • The most common hold is Immunizations. Understand FIU's immunization requirements, and submit all necessary documents/waivers ASAP.
    • Another common hold is from Admissions for undetermined residency. Find more details on how to resolve it on the OneStop website.
  4. International Students Only (F-1 or J-1 Student Status Visas):
    • You are required to have health insurance and will have an Insurance Hold on your account until proof is shown. Get more information from Student Health Services.
    • You are also required to attend an Immigration Orientation conducted by the office of International and Student Scholar Services, which is separate from Freshman Orientation. You can find more details on the ISSS website.
  5. The valuable MyMajorMatch tool is an interest, skills, and values assessment that determines what careers and education would be best for you based upon your answers. Learn more about MyMajorMatch.
  6. Download the FIU Student Affairs and Scavify Apps to enhance your orientation expereince through your mobile device. More details on how to use these will be provided closer to the date of your orientation.
