Pre-Orientation To-Dos

Make sure you take care of these important items ASAP so you can register for your classes at Orientation.

  1. Math Placement: All incoming freshmen students are required to take the ALEKS Math Placement Assessment no later than 72 hours prior to orientation, even if you've taken AP or other credit-worthy exams. The test is free of charge for the first attempt and you can find more details on the Math Department website. College of Business majors are required to take the ALEKS in a proctored environment.
  2. Resolve Holds: Check the upper right-hand corner of your Student Center in My.FIU.edu for any Holds and resolve them before attending orientation or you will not be able to register for your classes.
    • The First-Time Student hold will be removed once you complete your Freshman Orientation.
    • The most common hold is Immunizations. Understand FIU's immunization requirements, and submit all necessary documents/waivers 30-45 days before your orientation date. High Schools may not automatically send your records, so you need to be proactive to ensure that these holds are removed.
    • Another common hold is from Admissions for undetermined residency. Find more details on how to resolve it on the OneStop website.
  3. International Students Only (F-1 or J-1 Student Status Visas):
    • You are required to have health insurance and will have an Insurance Hold on your account until proof is shown. Get more information from Student Health Services.
    • You are also required to attend an International Student Services Session conducted by the office of International and Student Scholar Services, which is separate from Freshman Orientation. You can find more details on the ISSS website.
  4. Financial Aid: Visit your My.FIU.edu to check your To Do List for any pending Financial Aid items. Click through each item to learn how to complete and submit your documents online. Your financial aid will not be processed until verification is completed.
  5. MyMajorMatch: The valuable MyMajorMatch tool is an interest, skills, and values assessment that determines what careers and education would be best for you based upon your answers. Learn more about MyMajorMatch.
  6. Mobile Apps: Download the FIU Student Affairs and FIU Mobile apps to enhance your orientation experience through your mobile device. More details on how to use these will be provided at your orientation.
  7. Student Orgs: Set up your RoarSync account by logging in with your Panther ID to get a jumpstart on connecting with our hundreds of student organizations, some of whom you'll meet at orientation!
  8. Orientation Fee Payment: If you have an outstanding Orientation Fee, please pay it before your scheduled session. The university payment system (via My.FIU.edu) works best with Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox.
