Parents and Families

At Florida International University, we strongly believe that family members provide crucial support for the new experiences that students will encounter during college. Orientation and Parent Programs exist to help new students and their families with this transition and growth beginning at Orientation.

We also invite all parents and families to continue their involvement with FIU and to reconnect with their students on campus by attending our spirited Parent and Family Day that coincides with our annual Homecoming celebration.

Finally, to support you in your transition as your student begins college, we've assembled a variety of resources and links that we believe can help during this period.

Parent and Family Orientation

If your student is a freshman, he or she is required to attend our mandatory Freshman Orientation program. We are excited to offer you the opportunity to attend a concurrent Parent Orientation program to help answer your questions and ease concerns about your student's transition to college and FIU. Parent Orientation runs concurrently with your student's Freshman Orientation program. It is designed to provide you with important information about FIU, and you will hear from representatives of the following offices:

  • Undergraduate Academic Advising
  • Financial Aid and Student Financials
  • Housing & Residential Life
  • Student Health Services
  • Parking & Transportation
  • and many more!

To register for Parent Orientation, you may sign up while your student registers for Freshman Orientation, through their MYFIU account at cost of $30 per person if they are admitted for early fall/fall, and $25 if they are admitted for spring. You can also register on-site. For more information about Freshman Orientation, head over to the Freshmen Students area.

If you have additional questions, please contact our office at parent@fiu.edu or 305-348-6414 and we will be happy to assist you.

Parent and Family Orientation FAQs

  • Can I pay the orientation fee with student scholarships?
The orientation fee IS NOT covered by scholarships or any other form of financial aid. The fee can be paid online through the student’s my.fiu.edu account using a credit card or an e-check. Or the student may go to the Student Financials office, located in the Student Academic Sucess Center at MMC or Academic Center 1 at BBC to pay in cash or check.
  • Is the orientation fee included with the tuition deposit?
The orientation fee is not covered by the tuition deposit. They are two different fees that are paid separately. The tuition deposit MUST BE PAID OR WAIVED FIRST, otherwise the student will not have access to sign up for an orientation.
  • Where can I pay my student’s orientation fee?

You can pay for orientation by credit card or electronic check through the student’s my.fiu.edu account. Under the ‘Finances’ section in the middle of the page you will see a link that says Make a Payment. You can also pay with cash, check, or money order in person at the Cashier’s Office.

  • By when do I need to pay the orientation fee?

The orientation fee MUST be paid at the latest, one day prior to attending the orientation you signed up for.

  • I am having issues paying my student’s orientation fee online, what do I do?

The problem usually depends on the browser you are using. The payment feature is not compatible with Safari or Chrome. So, it is best to use Firefox or Internet Explorer. If your problem persists after trying a different browser, contact the Student Financials Office at (305)348-2126 for further assistance.

  • Does my student have to stay overnight during Orientation? Do they stay in single gender floors/residence halls?
Yes, the overnight portion of Freshman orientation is mandatory for students attending a session at the Modesto Maidique Campus for early fall/fall. This allows your student to conveniently experience all aspects of our program while also forming connections with fellow new students.

Students do not stay in single gender floors or residence halls. However the suite or room they are assigned to during orientation will be with members of the same gender.
  • Do parents stay overnight during orientation program?

No, parents DO NOT stay overnight with the students. Parents will have to make their own accommodations if they are from out of the area.

The nearest hotel to the Modesto Maidique Campus is Comfort Suites Inn located at 3901 Southwest 117th Avenue, Miami, FL 33175. You may contact them at (305) 220-3901.

It is not mandatory for parents to attend orientation but we welcome you to attend if your schedule allows it.

If you cannot attend both days, we recommend that you attend the first day as the majority of information will be covered regarding academics and fees/payments etc.

  • What if my student cannot attend orientation?
Please contact our office at (305)348-6414 for a detailed explanation on your student’s options if they cannot attend orientation. However, please note that freshmen orientation IS MANDATORY.
