Benefits and Applying for Educational Benefits

To start receiving your educational benefits you need to apply through the Veterans On-Line Application (VONAPP) website.

The VA Forms you can fill out in VONAPP are:

22-1990 Application for VA Educational Benefits
This form is to apply for Post 911 GI Bill (Chapter 33), Montgomery GI Bill Active Duty (Chapter 30), Montgomery GI Bill Selected Reserve (Chapter 1606), REAP (Reserve Educational Assistance Program-Chapter 1607).
22-1990E Application for Family Member to use Transferred Benefits
This form applies for Dependents’ using Post 911 GI Bill (Chapter 33), and/or DEAP (Survivors’ and Dependents’ Educational Assistance Program-Chapter 35)
22-1995 Request for Change of VA Education Program or Place of Training
This form applies for Post 911 GI Bill (Chapter 33), Montgomery GI Bill Active Duty (Chapter 30), Montgomery GI Bill Selected Reserve (Chapter 1606), and/or REAP (Reserve Educational Assistance Program-Chapter 1607)
22-5495 Request for Change of VA Education Program or Place of Training (Survivors’ and Dependents’ Education Assistance)
This form applies for Dependents’ using Post 911 GI Bill (Chapter 33), and/or DEAP (Survivors’ and Dependents’ Educational Assistance Program-Chapter 35)
22-8691 Application for Work-Study Allowance
This form is to apply for Work-Study here at the FIU VA office when space is available.
28-1900 Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment Benefits
This form is to apply for Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment Benefits (Chapter 31).

Applying to FIU 

  • All prospective students need to complete an FIU admissions applications. Visit Admissions to complete your application.
  • For High School and Transfer students, go to the Admissions website to apply.
  • For Graduate-Degree seeking students, go to the Admissions website to apply.
  • If you have less than 60 credits of higher education you will need to submit ACT or SAT test score and a final high school transcript (or GED test score).

Once Admitted to FIU

Documents that you need to bring with you to the Veteran and Military Affairs office:

  • A copy of your Certificate of Eligibility (COE): this certificate is provided by the Dept. of Veterans Affairs, you need to bring this no matter if you are a transferring or a starting Veterans, Active Duty, Reservists, eligible dependents and spouses admitted to FIU.
  • Request for Change of VA Education Program or Place of Training Form 22-1995: If you are transferring from any College/University or changing programs from Undergraduate to Graduate you will need to bring a copy of the 22-1995, if you are the veteran, active duty, reservist.
  • Request for Change of VA Education Program or Place of Training Form 22-5495: If you are transferring from any College/University or changing programs from Undergraduate to Graduate you need to bring a copy of the 22-5495, if you are the Dependent using Post 911 GI Bill, Survivors’ and Dependents’ Educational Assistance Program.
  • A copy of your current Immunizations records will be required as well.
  • You will also need to submit an FIU Enrollment Certification Request through MyFIU.
