Counseling and Psychological Services

FIU's Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS) provides mental health services to students that will facilitate and enhance their personal learning, emotional well-being, and academic skills development. We are committed to providing consultation to the FIU community affected by threatened or actual violence and promoting the ability to live a full, rich life.

  • What to expect

During the initial appointment, students meet with a therapist to discuss current concerns, gather information about the student’s history, and review recommendations for treatment. The recommended treatment may include individual or group therapy provided by the Counseling Center or a referral to community providers.

CAPS offers limited, short-term counseling. If you need or prefer long-term or weekly counseling, then a referral to a community provider may be a better fit for you. The Counseling Center does not offer long-term, intensive, or specialized treatment generally required for substance abuse, personality disorders, or severe or chronic emotional difficulties.

Students generally attend counseling appointments that last 30-45 minutes and occur every 2-3 weeks.
