Senior Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs

Dr. Bejar serves as advisor and provides direct support to the University President as well as the Executive Vice President and Provost in her primary responsibility for educational policy, academic programs and student affairs. Much of her recent work is dedicated to mobilizing and working with teams of education professionals tor research, pilot, develop and implement 21st century student success initiatives.

Dr. Bejar previously held the positions of Vice President for Academic Affairs, Vice Provost for Academic Affairs, and Vice Provost for Academic Planning and Accountability. In her role as the first Vice Provost for Academic Planning and Accountability for FIU, she was responsible for establishing the institutional assessment and evaluation plans and policies that currently undergird the university's practice and continuous improvement and developing a culture of evidence based decision making.In addition to teaching in public schools, Dr. Bejar has served as an Academic Policy Analysts for the Massachusetts Board of Higher Education. Dr. Bejar's research includes contributions to an encyclopedia on women in higher education, and as Principal Investigator for a funded grant studying minority-serving institutions-models on success. She received a PhD in Higher Education Administration from Boston College, an MS in International and Intercultural Development Education from FIU, and a BA in Psychology and Elementary Education from the University of Miami. She is a member of the board of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, serves on the Florida Board of Governors Council of Academic Vice Presidents Work Group on Program Coordination and is an advisory board member to Excelencia in Education, an organization that aims to accelerate higher education success for Hispanics.

Assistant Vice President, Academic & Student Affairs
  As Assistant Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs, Dr. Cram provides leadership in aligning division goals to the university strategic plan while cultivating partnerships across various units, programs, and external partners to enhance curricular and co-curricular alignment for Academic and Student Affairs. She develops programs and partnerships, leads synergistic strategies to coalesce programming with academic and student affairs, leads 21st Century Workforce Initiatives, including the development of an academic and assessment-based framework and design strategy for alternative credentials.

Dr. Cram has over eight years of experience in developing innovative and effective student success initiatives, using data to improve student outcomes, and leading collaborative efforts across the university to improve student services. In her former position, Dr. Cram worked collaboratively with external and internal stakeholders to operationalize student success. This includes developing partnerships with local K-12 school districts, inclusive of providing oversight as a faculty mentor to over 20 sections of a high school dual enrollment course; and serving as a liaison for FIU with external networks, such as the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities, Excelencia in Education, and the Florida Consortium of Metropolitan Research Universities. Dr. Cram earned her BA in International Affairs and Spanish and her MS in Higher Education from Florida State University. In 2017, she earned her PhD in Public Affairs from FIU with research focused on impact of student success initiatives.

Breny DeParre Garcia, Associate Vice President Health Dr. Breny DaParre Garcia
Associate Vice President, Student Health & Wellness 

Dr. Breny DaParre Garcia is the Associate Vice President for Student Health & Wellness. In this role, Dr. Garcia provides leadership over key areas of Dean of Students, Counseling & Psychological Services, Health Promotion Services, Victim Empowerment Program, and Student Conduct & Conflict Resolution. She works across academic and student affairs, and collaboratively with units across campus, to support the university’s strategic goals related to building and supporting a culture of healthy living, promoting mental health initiatives across the university, and representing the university at the state level on such matters. Dr. Garcia brings with her 14 years of experience from FIU’s Office of the President, previously serving as the Associate Vice President for Institutional Relations. She hold three degrees with FIU: a B.A. in Political Science, an M.S. in Higher Education, and Ed.D. in Higher Education with research focus in crisis leadership.

Anthony Desantis, AVP BBC Dr. Anthony DeSantis
Assistant Vice President, BBC

Dr. Anthony DeSantis was appointed to the role of Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs, BBC in October 2017. He has over 18 Years of higher education experience in various student affairs functional areas including career and counseling, residential life and housing, student affairs graduate programs marketing and disability resources. In his current role, he provides divisional leadership to the Biscayne Bay Campus, the Wellness and Recreation Centers, Wolfe University Center, Student Media, Campus Life, and Orientation & Parent Programs. Dr. DeSantis received his Ph.D. in Conflict Resolution and Analysis from Nova SouthEastern University, Masters of Science in Higher Education Administration, and Bachelors of Science in Exercise Science from Barry University. He currently serves as the 2016-2018 NASPA Region III Director and Served as the Florida State Director for NASPA from 2010-2014 and is a recipient of the 2012 NASPA mid-level Student Affairs Professional Award.

Matilde Gramling, AVP Administrative Affairs Matilde Gramling
Assistant Vice President Administrative Affairs

Responsible for the daily business associated with the division's budget, Matilde Gramling works closely with directors and the budget managers in the division to manage financial and personnel-related processes. Ms. Gramling also oversees the Activity and Service Business office, working closely with Student Government Association in the distribution of their allocated student fees budget.

Interim Dean of Students

Dr. Bares Pelaez earned her BA in music from the Unviersity of Maryland, College Park, her M.Ed. in Higher Education and Student Affairs from the University of South Carolina and Her Ph.D. In higher Education at FIU. Bronwen joined the Division of Student Affairs at FIU in 2006 as the founding Coordinator for the Center for Leadership & Service and Women's Center atthe Biscayne Bay Campus; her current osition as the Director for FIU's WOmen's Center in Student Affairs at FIU allows her to advocate for systemic changes that better the lives of womxn and all students through programming focused on issues that impact womxn's intellectual, professional, and personal growth.

Student Ombudsperson

Sofia has over 10 years of higher education experience in various student affairs functional areas including residential life and housing, disability resources and fraternity and sorority life. She has been a member of the FIU family since 2011. Sofia serves as the liaison between the Senior Vice President and administrative units within the Division and the University. As Student Ombudsperson, Sofia will serve as a resource and neutral party for students who have concerns, identify options and strategies for resolution, and provide referrals with the appropriate department for review.  Her work and interest in social change, access in higher education, and diversity has been the impetus for her pursuit of a Doctorate in Public Affairs from FIU, with a focus toward organizational agility in higher education and technology platforms. Sofia is a double Panther Alumna, and holds a Master’s in Public Administration (MPA) and Bachelor’s degree in English. Furthermore, she holds a post-Graduate Certificate in Human Resource Management and teaches in the FIU First Year Program.

Jennifer Brito, Assistant Director HR Jennifer Brito
Assistant Director of HR Operations

Jennifer is an FIU alumnus and joined the university in 2011. In 2017, she joined the Division of Student Affairs to manage the Human Resources function for the Division. Ms. Brito works closely with Matilde Gramling on personnel-related processes and budget-related issues as it pertains to personnel.

Coordinator of Administrative Services

Jake is a two-time FIU alumnus who has been at the university since 2011. He has supported the growth and development of students and alumni in his past roles within the Offices of Residential Life, Campus Life BBC, and Alumni Relations. In July 2017, Jake assumed his current role as the Administrative Services Coordinator. He is responsible for the coordination of the university’s mandatory sexual assault training program, co-chairing the It’s On Us committee, and supporting the Dean of Students Office with Panthers Care, case management and special events.

Care Coordinator 

Pamela Castillo graduated from Florida International University in 2014 with her Bachelors in International Relations. She returned back to FIU in the Spring of 2015 to continue her education, and obtained her Masters in Higher Education Administration. After graduation she moved to Lubbock, Texas where she was an Assistant Director of Student Conduct at Texas Tech. She is now back at FIU working with students of concern and coordinating the Behavioral Intervention Team as the Care Coordinator in the Dean’s Office. She also supports Fostering Panther Pride in efforts to connect students to resources in the community to guarantee their success at FIU.

Senior Administrative Assistant

Elizabeth Rizo joined FIU in 1997 and has been with the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs since August 2011. Ms. Rizo supports Matilde Gramling, Assistant Vice President Administrative  Affairs, and oversees many aspects of the daily operations of the VP's Office. She serves on the FIU - United Way Steering Committee, the Women in Student Affairs Planning CIrcle, and the Division's Technology Committee. She is a certified Title IX Investigator, and is trained in CERT by the Office of Emergency Management in Miami-Dade County.

Laura Mazo joined FIU in April 2019. Ms. Mazo supports daily operations of the as the first point of contact for students and visitors. She directly supports Sofia Trelles, Student Ombudsperson.

Lessie Reid joined FIU in September 2002. Ms. Reid supports the Assistant Vice-President with the oversight of Student Affairs daily operations on the Biscayne Bay Campus.
