FIU Panther Shadows Program

The FIU Panther Shadows program is a one day opportunity for FIU students and alumni to connect with employers, community partners, and professional alumni to observe and learn about professional roles related to majors and industries of interest. Explore different career possibilities and see firsthand how classroom skills apply in the workplace. Meet and network with employers who are ready to hire FIU Panther students and alumni.

Students/Alumni (Participants)

Job Shadowing allows you to observe professionals in industry and careers of your interest in their typical work day. This program serves as a form of experiential learning, where you as a participant can see what it is like in the “day in the life” of a professional. This opportunity can also help you get your foot in the door for that competitive job or internship you have been waiting for!

  • Participant Requirements
    • To apply to the FIU Panther Shadows program opportunities you must have an active account on Handshake and an updated and approved resume.
      • The resume needs to include your major, GPA, and your anticipated graduation date.
    • Once your resume has been approved on Handshake, you will be able to apply to all FIU Panther Shadows opportunities.
      • Attend one of the FIU Panther Shadows Program Participant Information Session to learn more about the program and how it works!
      • Between January 18– February 18, search through Handshake for posting listed as “FIUShadows:___” and apply to those you are interested.

    • If you are selected for the program, you must attend one of two dates provided for the Mandatory Participant Orientation Session. This session is designed to brief you on logistics, planning, and to sign off on waivers.

    The FIU Panther Shadows program does not provide academic credit or monetary compensation; it is solely for the purpose of observation and networking. Participants are responsible for their meals, as well as, travel costs to and from their FIU Panther Shadows Host Site.

Employers (Hosts)

The FIU Panther Shadows program is a one day structured program that is designed to connect FIU students and alumni to Host Sites to observe and learn about professional roles related to majors and industries of interest. The FIU Panther Shadows Hosts do not provide academic credit or monetary compensation; but instead provide an opportunity for participants to observe and network with professional staff.

  • Program Outline

    Hosts are invited to plan shadowing experiences for a full work day to allow participants to see what a typical day is like in the selected profession or career. Participants are not allowed to work or assist in any work since they are not being compensated with academic credit or monetary compensation. However, participants are encouraged to learn by asking, taking notes, and networking when appropriate.

    Hosts can also integrate several activities in the Panther Shadows opportunity in order to allow for more flexibility for staff and to promote company brand and culture:

    • Orientation on company, culture, career opportunities, and agenda outline
    • Networking breakfast or lunch can be provided with employees and participants
    • Informational interviews can be conducted prior to beginning of the shadow
    • Provide guided facility or building tour
    • Allow observations, shadowing, and questions
    • Offer meet and greets with executive staff and knowledge experts

  • Program Details
    • In order to serve as a Host Site for the FIU Panther Shadows program you must have an employer account on Handshake.
      • Do you already have an account in Handshake? Make sure to add Florida International University as one of your schools.
      • Don’t have a Handshake account? Register at https://fiu.joinhandshake.com/
    • Once registered, you can post your Panther Shadows:
      • In your home tab, select “Post a Job”, select your job type is “Experiential Learning”
      • Label your job shadow: “FIUShadows: POSITION TITLE SHADOWING”
        • Templates on Job Shadows are provided here
      • Go through Details, Preferences, and submit!
    • Contact Elery Rojas, Assistant Director of Internships at elerojas@fiu.edu to notify of interest of the FIU Panther Shadows Program
    • Begin creating your FIU Panther Shadows opportunity before applications open (Applications open January 1-February 1).
      • You are invited to host several participants if you have the ability to, as well as, participate on several days of the FIU Panther Shadows week, March 11-14;
      • We will notify you of selected matches to your shadow program by no later than March 4.
    • By March 5, Host Site will need to notify participants of Day of Details
    • March 11-14 FIU Panther Shadows opportunities are hosted! Participants will report directly to Host Sites as detailed on their respective agendas.
