Medical Accommodations

Medical accommodations are available for students with disabilities or chronic medical conditions that inhibit their ability to live in any one of our housing options. Students can request these accommodations at any time before or during their stay in FIU Housing as long as they meet the following criteria:

  • The student has documented disability or chronic medical condition.
  • A licensed medical professional has verified the student's condition. (May not be a family friend or relative of the student.)

All medical documentation should be submitted to the Disability Resource Center (DRC). Documentation will be kept confidential and shared with other university staff on a need to know basis only. See our guidelines for compiling documentation.

Process

  • Applying in Housing Agreement

In the housing agreement, when asked if the student may need some type of special accommodation, student should indicate, "YES." Student must contact the DRC to register with them through their process, and provide all medical documentation related to their housing needs.

Once the student has registered with the DRC and provided the necessary documentation, the DRC will work with the Housing office to assign the student to a space that matches the student's medical needs. Requests are evaluated on a case-by-case basis with respect to sufficient documentation meeting university guidelines and addressing the impact of the disability supporting the need for housing accommodations.

  • Applying Mid-Semester

To apply students need to fill out and submit the Medical Accommodation Request form. The medical documentation along with these forms must be sent to the DRC.

Re: Request for Reasonable Accommodation Based on a Medical Need

Receipt of documentation within a reasonable timeframe of hall opening should be strictly adhered to. Failure to submit required documentation noted above significantly decreases our chances of being able to provide accommodation such as assigning a student to a particular building or space based on proximity to classes or academic buildings.

Available Accommodations

  • Mobility impairment - Most of our residence halls have wheelchair accessible rooms which include roll-in showers
  • Deaf or hard of hearing - Rooms in any of our facilities can be equipped with fire alarm flashers
  • Blind or visually impaired - Service animals
  • Emotional support animals

Limitations

We are unable to:

  • Provide a dust, allergen, mold or mildew-free accommodation
  • Provide a separate low distraction living environment accommodation based solely on a diagnosis of ADHD or a learning disability
  • Assign or move a preferred roommate along with student for which special accommodations are being offered unless the roommate would otherwise be eligible for the space
  • Assign a student to a particular building or space based on proximity to classes or academic buildings
  • Provide a different bed (however, we can remove the existing bed in the room if deemed medically-necessary so that student can bring their own)
  • Accept documentation which names a specific building in which accommodation must or cannot be provided
  • Offer housing space to a student that is on our waiting list based on a disability or physical condition

If eligible, some students may request medical cancellation of their housing contract should the burden of living on campus with medical condition become too great.
