Parents and Families

At Florida International University, we strongly believe that family members provide crucial support for the new experiences that students will encounter during college. Orientation and Family Programs exist to help new students and their families with this transition and growth beginning at Orientation.

We also invite all parents and families to continue their involvement with FIU and to reconnect with their students on campus by attending our spirited Parent and Family Day.

Finally, to support you in your transition as your student begins college, we've assembled a variety of resources and links that we believe can help during this period.

Parent and Family Orientation

If your student is a freshman, they are required to complete our mandatory Freshman Orientation program. In response to the coronavirus pandemic, if your student is admitted for Summer/Early Fall or Fall 2020, their Freshman Orientation will take place in a one-day, web-based session via Zoom.

In lieu of our traditional Parent and Family Orientation program, we developed an online Parent and Family Webinar Series throughout the summer to help answer your questions and ease concerns about your student's transition to college. For details on the webinars and to register, click on the "Parent and Family Webinar Series Registration" drop-down below. This series is designed to provide you with important information about FIU policies and resources. You will hear from representatives from the following offices:

  • Academic Advising
  • Financial Aid and Student Financials
  • ShopFIU
  • Housing & Residential Life
  • Dean of Students
  • FIU Police Department
  • Development Office for Student Success
  • and many more!

To ensure that you don't miss out on these opportunities, have your student submit your name and email address when their sign up for their Freshman Orientation program. You can anticipate receiving more information about these web-based sessions starting in early May. For more information about your student's Orientation process, see Undergraduate Orientation.

If you have additional questions, please email us or for the fastest assistance, use Live Chat available here on our website from 8:00 am-5:00 pm Monday through Friday.
