Parents and Families

At Florida International University, we strongly believe that family members provide crucial support for the new experiences that students will encounter during college. Orientation and Family Programs exist to help new students and their families with this transition and growth beginning at Orientation.

We also invite all parents and families to continue their involvement with FIU and to reconnect with their students by participating in our Parent and Family week of opportunities.

Finally, to support you in your transition as your student begins college, we've assembled a variety of resources and links that we believe can help during this period.

Parent and Family Orientation

If your student is admitted as a first-year, they are required to complete our mandatory First-Year Orientation program, which is a one-day program that can be completed in person or online.

NEW STUDENTS, this is NOT your Orientation. Please login to MY.FIU.EDU to register for your Orientation under the "Orientation" tile. This orientation is for NEW PARENTS AND FAMILY MEMBERS ONLY.

We developed an online Parent and Family Orientation course on Canvas. The course is designed to provide you (as the parent and family member) with important information about FIU policies and resources. With a small registration fee of $15, you have the access to important academic and support related information to help answer your questions and ease concerns about your student’s transition to college. It is self-paced and can be reviewed at your own time. You have the freedom to move around to any module of your choice and will have contact information for each department. Access to this course gives you all the information you need to best support you and your student in one easy location!

Once you register, you can request your complimentary electronic copy of the book, College Ready: Expert Advice for Parents to Simplify the College Transition. Written by experts, each chapter addresses top-of-mind concerns and includes conversation starters to empower you to feel fully prepared for anything. The text also includes a comprehensive checklist that helps families and students stay on top of summer to-dos!
