Parents and Families

At Florida International University, we strongly believe that family members provide crucial support for the new experiences that students will encounter during college. Orientation and Family Programs exist to help new students and their families with this transition and growth beginning at Orientation.

We also invite all parents and families to continue their involvement with FIU and to reconnect with their students on campus by attending our spirited Parent and Family Day.

Finally, to support you in your transition as your student begins college, we've assembled a variety of resources and links that we believe can help during this period.

Parent and Family Orientation

If your student is a freshman, they are required to complete our mandatory Freshman Orientation program. We are excited to offer you the opportunity to attend a Parent & Family Orientation program concurrent with their On-Campus Freshman Orientation to help answer your questions and ease concerns about your student's transition to college and FIU. It is designed to provide you with important information about FIU, and you will hear from representatives of the following offices:

  • Academic Advising
  • Financial Aid and Student Financials
  • Housing & Residential Life
  • Student Health Services
  • Parking & Transportation
  • and many more!

Parent & Family Orientation is two-days from 8:00 am to approximately 7:00 pm on day one and 8am to approximately 2:00 pm on day two. To register for Parent & Family Orientation, you may sign up while your student registers for Freshman On-Campus Orientation, through their MYFIU account at cost of $35 per person. You can also register on-site. There is no on-campus overnight option for family members of students attending orientation. For more information about your student's Orientation process, see Undergraduate Orientation.

If you have additional questions, please contact our office at or 305-348-6414 and we will be happy to assist you.

Parent and Family Orientation FAQs

  • Does my student have to stay overnight during Orientation?
While highly encouraged, the overnight portion of Freshman On-Campus Orientation is not mandatory for students attending a session at the Modesto Maidique Campus for early fall/fall. Students who wish to opt out of the overnight portion of the program will receive an e-mail two weeks before their scheduled orientation date which will include an opt-out form in order not to stay overnight. Spring admitted students will not have the overnight option because the program is only one day.
  • Do parents stay overnight during orientation program?

No, parents DO NOT stay overnight with the students. Parents will have to make their own accommodations if they are from out of the area.

The nearest hotel to the Modesto Maidique Campus is Comfort Suites Inn located at 3901 Southwest 117th Avenue, Miami, FL 33175. You may contact them at (305) 220-3901.

  • Is Parent and Family Orientation mandatory? Do I have to attend both days?

It is not mandatory for parents and families to attend orientation but we welcome you to attend if your schedule allows it.

If you cannot attend both days for early fall/fall, we recommend that you attend the first day as the majority of information will be covered regarding academics and fees/payments etc.

  • What if my student cannot attend orientation?
Please contact our office at (305)348-6414 for a detailed explanation on your student’s options if they cannot attend orientation. However, please note that Freshmen On-Campus Orientation IS MANDATORY and their only option may be to defer their admission to a future term if they cannot attend.
  • How do I change my student’s orientation date?
If your student needs to change their orientation date they can contact the orientation office at (305) 348-6414 or visit the office at MMC in the Graham Center (GC) Room 189 or BBC in the Wolfe Center (WUC) Room 129 for further assistance no later than three business days prior to their originally scheduled session. If a student does not change/cancel their scheduled orientation within this timeframe, they may be charged a $35 no show fee.
