• Chosen Name and Pronouns

  FIU has a Chosen First Name Policy that enables all Panthers to display their chosen first name and pronouns to the university community where feasible. FIU acknowledges that a chosen first name should be used whenever possible in the course of university business and education to affirm, reflect, and/or express their gender, culture, and/or other aspects of their social identity at FIU. In doing so, we uphold the values of our FIU as an institution that respects the diversity and the dignity of each member of our community.

  All Panthers may enter a chosen first name and pronouns into PantherSoft through a self-service option. Please note: Implementation of this roll-out into a variety of university systems will occur over time.

  • Instructions for students wishing to add a chosen first name can be found at go.fiu.edu/chosenfirstname.
  • Instructions for staff wishing to add a chosen first name can be found at go.fiu.edu/chosenfirstname_hr.

  All Panthers are also encouraged to download and read the Inclusive Language Guide created to assist the FIU community with using accurate terms and good faith effort to create a nurturing and supportive environment for all.  

  For more information on how to correctly use people's pronouns, you may consult MyPronouns.org. There, you will find additional resources and explanation around pronoun use. You also may request our 1-hour training on Chosen Name and Gender Pronoun Use through MPAS.

• The Coming Out & Pronoun Use Guide

  As part of our Safe Zone Training program, we developed a one-page guide for Advocates who wish to effectively support LGBTQA* people in their coming out process. 

  This guide includes specific ways to appropriately share, ask about, and use pronouns as a way to affirm other people's gender identities.

• The Flying Gender Unicorn

  Developed by Associate Director of LGBTQA Initiatiaves at FIU, Dr. Erica Jayne Friedman, the Flying Gender Unicorn is a tool used to expand on a discussion of differences between sexuality identity, sexual attraction, emotional attraction, gender identity, gender expression, and gender assigned at birth.

  The Flying Gender Unicorn is an evolution of TSER's Gender Unicorn. Now able to "fly off," escaping the limitations of the gender binary, the flying gender unicorn acknowledges the spectrums and variations that occur in our gendered biology (genitals, hormones, chromosomes, etc.). A conversation specifically about the prevalence, rights, needs, and experiences of intersex people are included using this tool. Additionally, the tool offers more diversity in the options for gender identity, gender expression, sexual identity, and attraction than the original Gender Unicorn.

• Gender Inclusive Restrooms

  Florida International University supports all individuals in using the restroom that aligns with their gender identity.  For those who would like to use a gender-inclusive restroom, we have many on campus. We also continue to work with the University administration to provide more of these restrooms in buildings across our FIU.  Below individuals will find a list of the locations of all gender-neutral single stall and multi-user restrooms.  If you find a restroom on our list is labeled incorrectly, please email lgbtq@fiu.edu.

  Gender Inclusive Restrooms

  Students are also encouraged to download the Refuge Restrooms phone application for iOS and Android phones. The Refuge app is an open-source, location-based tool that helps the user find the gender inclusive restroom closest to them. No matter where you are (on- or off-campus), if you find a gender inclusive restroom that is not listed in the Refuge app or website, you can add the location so others can find it!
