Sharing Your Concern

Why share your concern?

Help someone before their situation becomes a crisis. Our team will interact with students to provide them with the resources they need to feel supported in their difficult time. Being able to identify students of concern is a priority to intervene early and appropriately. Sharing your concern supports a culture of care at FIU.

What types of concerns can I share?

Personal issues such as:

  • alcoholism or substance abuse
  • financial constraints
  • struggling to make ends meet
  • a death in the family that causes difficulty to focus in school
  • sexual assault or violence
  • feelings of sadness
  • hopelessness
  • desperation
  • eating disorders
  • relationship violence
  • medical concerns
  • struggling to fit into college life
  • keeping up with academic demands

Concerns about changes in behavior such as:

  • severe anger
  • thoughts or threats of harm to oneself or others
  • strange or unusual acts or practices
  • aggression or extreme mood swings
  • talk of a weapon on campus

How to share your concern?

  • Share Your Concern using this form where you may provide details about your concern.
  • You may also call the Dean of Students office at (305) 348-2797 for a consultation.

What happens when you share a concern?

Each concern is unique and handled on a case-by-case basis. The Dean of Students will review the information provided to determine the appropriate response, which may include meeting with the student of concern, gathering additional information from faculty or staff, or contacting you for further information. Generally the process is initiated within 24 hours of receiving a report.

Is there an anonymous incident reporting form? Or is there some type of promise to keep referrals confidential?

You may submit an anonymous report. However, if you provide your name it will help us to follow up with you if additional information is needed. If you provide your name, the Dean of Students office can provide confidentiality, which means we will not share your name or submitted report with the student you are concerned about.
