Adventure Recreation

The Adventure Recreation program is designed to get you outside to experience nature and recreation throughout Florida and the Southeastern U.S. Adventure Recreation is committed to offering adventure-based experiential education opportunities that promote personal growth, leadership development and respect for the great outdoors.

Trips and workshops are open to FIU students, FIU Affiliates (Faculty/Staff/Alumni) and Non-members (friends) at differing costs. Non-members MUST be affiliated with a participant to attend trips and/or workshops.

Payment is due at registration and must be made using debit, credit cards or FIU One Card. No other form of payment will be accepted. All purchases will be processed at the time of registration and all sales are FINAL. Refund is only available if the trip/workshop is cancelled. 

  • All participants will be required to sign a waiver provided either by the trip leader/sponsor
  • For overnight trips, all participants will be required to attend a pre-trip meeting for their specific trip
  • If the trip involves water-based activities, life jackets must be worn at ALL times

Spring Semester Trips

  • Take a Hike!

    Trip Time & Date: Saturday, February 2nd | 8:15 a.m.-3:30 p.m.

    Location: Immokalee, FL

    Description: Join us on a 4-mile hike through the serene pine flatwoods, oak hammocks, popash slough surrounded by sawgrass marsh where you can unplug and slow down.

    This trail is part of the Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail where Woodpeckers, flycatchers, warblers, hawks and owls are frequently spotted.

    Added bonus! On our way out to the trail, we will visit the nation’s smallest US Post Office located in Ochopee, FL where you will get a postcard and the Ochopee post mark!

  • John Pennekamp Snorkeling Trip

    Trip Time & Date: Saturday, February 16th | 6:15 a.m.-4:15 p.m.

    Location: John Pennekamp State Park, Key Largo, FL

    Description: Enjoy a 2.5-hour snorkeling tour of the vibrant shallow-water coral reefs of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary followed by a short 45-minute drive to Robbie's in Islamorada to feed tarpons & free time to explore shops. 

    John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park was established in 1963 & was the first undersea park in the United States. 

    The park contains a wide variety of tropical vegetation, shore birds and marine life and is among the most beautiful and diverse of all living communities.

    Includes: transportation, entrance fees, snorkel gear rental, ½ wetsuit, 2.5 hour guided tour, bucket of fish to feed for Tarpons.

  • Springs, S'mores and Snores

    Trip Time & Date: Saturday, March 9th 7:30 a.m.– Monday, March 11th 8:00 p.m.

    Location: Ocala National Forest, Ocala, FL

    Description: Join us in an exploration of the southernmost forest in the U.S. The crystal-clear waters stay a cool 69-72 degrees year-round.

    On this 3-day trip, you will camp out at Juniper Springs and learn how to build a tent and start a campfire, standup paddleboard (SUP) the Silver River, the “Gateway to the Ocala National Forest”, explore the Yearling Hiking Trail (5-mile loop) and Silver Glen Springs. 

    Day 1: Travel to Ocala National Forrest, setup camp, change into swimwear and enjoy a leisure swim at Juniper Springs followed by a typical Dutch oven camp dinner and s’mores by the campfire.

    Day 2: Enjoy the sunrise or barely wake up for breakfast, whatever floats your boat! Prepare your sack lunch and head out to explore Silver Springs State Park to standup paddleboard (SUP) through twists and turns of the Silver River. Wildlife frequently seen include manatees, alligators, turtles, wading birds, fish, monkeys and more!

    After our paddle, you’ll have time to explore the park, grab a bite or enjoy some of the park’s sweet treats! We will then head back to camp and enjoy dinner and dessert by the campfire.

    Day 3: Pack up, enjoy breakfast & prepare a sack lunch for our Yearling hiking trail exploration where the Longs established their homestead. On this hike you’ll see a giant sink hole, the location of the old post office and the Long cemetery where some of the Long children and Reuben are buried. After our hike, we’ll head to Silver Glen Springs to snorkel or float the spring where a wide variety of fish can be seen throughout the year. After our swim, we’ll travel back to campus.

  • Crystal-Clear Kayaking in Rock Springs

    Trip Time & Date: Saturday, March 30th 7:30 a.m.– Sunday, March 31st 8:00 p.m.

    Location: Kelly Park, Apopka, FL

    Description:  On this 2-day trip, you will camp out at Kelly Park and learn how to build a tent and start a campfire, explore the surrounding trails, take a dip in Rock Springs to snorkel or float (B.Y.O.F.- Bring your own float) and clear kayak in Rock Springs Run (2- 2.5hour tour). The crystal-clear water stays a cool 68 degrees year-round.

    Day 1: Travel to Kelly Park, setup camp, prepare & enjoy your lunch, explore surrounding hiking trails, snorkel, float (B.Y.O.F) or both at Juniper Spring where a variety of fish can be seen throughout the year. You’ll end the day with a typical Dutch-oven camp dinner and s’mores by the campfire.

    Day 2: Prepare your breakfast & lunch, pack up camp and clear kayak Rock Springs Run (2-2.5 hours tour) where you will paddle upstream and enjoy a relaxing drift back to the launch site. This paddle route provides the perfect setting to sit back, relax and enjoy nature! Wildlife you may see include alligators, wading birds, turtles, otters, deer, fish & more! Throughout the paddle, there will be several deep areas to take a dip in the water if you choose to.  After our kayak tour, we’ll travel back to campus.

  • Standup Paddle-boarding

    Trip Time & Date: Saturday, April 6th 6:00 a.m.-4:45 p.m.

    Location: Johnathan Dickinson State Park, Hobe Sound, FL

    Description: Come enjoy a relaxing paddle- standup paddleboard (SUP) in the Loxahatchee River where you can unplug and slow down. On this route you will see century old wonders of water lilies, air plants, slash pines and Spanish moss. You may also see alligators, wading birds, turtles, fish and manatees feeding on the vegetation.

    After the paddle, take a short drive down to the coast and visit the Blowing Rocks preserve where you can explore the Anastasia limestone shoreline- the largest on the Atlantic coast right here in Florida!
