Adventure Recreation

The Adventure Recreation program is designed to get you outside to experience nature and recreation throughout Florida and the Southeastern U.S. Adventure Recreation is committed to offering adventure-based experiential education opportunities that promote personal growth, leadership development and respect for the great outdoors.

Trips and workshops are open to FIU students, FIU Affiliates (Faculty/Staff) and Community members (friends) at differing costs. Community members MUST be affiliated with a participant to attend trips and/or workshops.

Payment is due at registration and must be made using debit or credit cards. No other form of payment will be accepted. All purchases will be processed at the time of registration and all sales are FINAL. Refund is only available if the trip/workshop is cancelled. 

  • All participants will be required to sign a waiver provided either by the trip leader/sponsor
  • For overnight trips, all participants will be required to attend a pre-trip meeting for their specific trip
  • If the trip involves water-based activities, life jackets must be worn at ALL times

Fall Semester Trips

  • Freshman Experience: John Pennekamp Snorkel Trip

    Trip Time & Date: Saturday, September 15th 12:30 p.m.-7:00 p.m.

    Location: John Pennekamp State Park, Key Largo, FL

    Description: Enjoy a 2.5 hour snorkeling tour of the vibrant shallow-water coral reefs of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary.

    John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park was established in 1963 & was the first undersea park in the United States. 

    The park contains a wide variety of tropical vegetation, shore birds and marine life and is among the most beautiful and diverse of all living communities. 

    Registration Deadline: Wednesday, September 12th, 2018

    Cost: FIU Freshmen Only: $45.00

    Includes: transportation, entrance fees, gear rental, 2.5 hour guided tour

    Lunch is NOT provided, bring a sack lunch.

  • Two Springs One Night - Ocala National Forest

    Trip Time & Date: Saturday, September 29th 6:00 a.m.– September 30th, Sunday, 11:00 p.m

    Location: Ocala National Forest, Ocala, FL

    Description: Join us in an exploration of the southernmost forest in the U.S. The crystal clear waters stay a cool 72 degrees year round.

    On this 2 day trip, you will camp out at Juniper Springs and learn how to build a tent, explore the Yearling hiking Trail (3.9 mile loop), snorkel Juniper spring & standup paddleboard (SUP) the Silver River, the “Gateway to the Ocala National Forest”.

    Day 1: Travel to Ocala National Forrest, setup camp, prepare & enjoy your lunch, explore Yearling hiking trail, snorkel, float or both at Juniper Spring where a wide variety of fish can be seen throughout the year. You’ll end the day with a typical camp dinner and s’mores by the campfire.

    Day 2: Pack up, prepare your breakfast & lunch, standup paddleboard (SUP) through twists and turns of the Silver River followed by time to sit back and relax or snorkel the spring and explore the fish. After our exploration, we will travel back to campus.

  • Kayak Eco-Tour Adventure

    Trip Time & Date: Saturday, October 13th 7:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m.

    Location: Marathon, FL

    Description: Enjoy a 4 hour tour that includes 2 sandbar stops, 1 for snorkeling and 1 for beach-combing and native plant exploration!

    On the private snorkeling sandbar, you can enjoy having a knowledgeable guide snorkeling alongside to help your group spot and ID marine life. You will also spend time in manatee and turtle territory and paddle through a magical mangrove tunnel that will have you in awe of nature.

    This is an adventurous tour at a fairly relaxing pace! The snorkeling area is very shallow and a perfect place to learn to snorkel or gain confidence while searching for the amazing life hidden on the sandbar and surrounding seagrass beds.

  • Springs, S'mores & Snores!- Ocala National Forest

    Trip Time & Date: Saturday, November 10th 8:00 a.m.– Monday, November 12th, 9:00 p.m.

    Location: Ocala National Forest, Ocala, FL

    Description: Join us in an exploration of the southernmost forest in the U.S. The crystal clear waters stay a cool 72 degrees year round.

    On this 3 day trip, you will camp out at Juniper Springs and learn how to build a tent and start a campfire, standup paddleboard (SUP) the Silver River, the “Gateway to the Ocala National Forest”, explore the Yearling hiking Trail (3.9 mile loop) and Silver Glen Springs.  

    Day 1: Travel to Ocala National Forrest, setup camp, change into swimwear and enjoy a leisure swim at Juniper Springs followed by a typical Dutch oven camp dinner and s’mores by the campfire.

    Day 2: Enjoy the sunrise or barely wake up for breakfast, whatever floats your boat! Prepare your sack lunch and head out to explore Silver Springs State Park to standup paddleboard (SUP) through twists and turns of the Silver River. After our paddle, you’ll have time to explore the park, grab a bite or enjoy some of the park’s sweet treats! We will then head back to camp and enjoy dinner by the campfire.

    Day 3: Pack up, enjoy breakfast & prepare a sack lunch for our Yearling hiking trail exploration where the Longs established their homestead. On this hike you’ll see a giant sink hole, remains of Rueben and Sara Long’s homestead, the location of the old post office and the Long cemetery where some of the Long children and Reuben are buried. After enjoying your sack lunch, we’ll head to Silver Glen Springs to snorkel or float the spring where a wide variety of fish can be seen throughout the year. After our swim, we’ll then head over to We will travel back to campus.

  • Canoeing at the Glades

    Trip Time & Date: November 17th, 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.

    Location: Everglades National Park, FL

    Description: Come enjoy a relaxing paddle in canoe country where you can unplug and slow down. This canoe trail will lead you through a 3.5 mile loop (2.5 hours) where you may see alligators, wading birds, turtles & fish.

    After the loop, enjoy relaxing in the largest wilderness area east of the Mississippi. Come experience the swamps and marshes of Everglades National Park right in your backyard!

    Description: This is a fun way to discover archery for the first time. Whether you have shot before, or just getting started, com try out the range!

    A certified coach is there to assist with safety instruction.

    Description: Come join the WRC in a 45 minute workshop & learn how to make a DIY natural insect repellent! You'll learn how to make it & take home your own 80 ml. bottle!
