Whether you are an incoming freshman or a returning student, you may find some of the services that we offer helpful to you during your time at FIU. There are many opportunities for emotional growth at a university, but not everyone makes it through college without experiencing some challenges along the way. It is recommended that students seek help if these difficulties are interfering with their academic or personal well-being. Our Counseling and Psychological Service (CAPS) team works together with other providers at Student Health Services to assist students in getting their emotional needs met. These include conflicts with or worry about friends or family, concerns about eating or drinking patterns and feelings of anxiety and depression. Although some concerns are more frequent than others, students' experiences are as varied as the students themselves. Staff members help each person to figure out her or his own situation, through individual, group and couples’ counseling, crisis counseling and referrals. FIU has psychiatrists, social workers and psychologists who are available by referral from either Counseling and Psychological Services or primary care clinicians within Student Health Services. Our psychiatrists provide evaluations and, if indicated, medication and short-term supportive psychotherapy.
